Clinical Training
Why train at the TWH Liver Centre?
TWH Liver Centre, situated in Toronto, Canada, is a premier ambulatory care setting for patients with liver disease. Our special interest is viral hepatitis and autoimmune liver diseases. Our patients come from all over Ontario, a catchment area of about 10 million people with immigrants from all over the world. Referrals to the TWH Liver Centre routinely come from primary care, from Gastroenterologists for second opinions, and from other subspecialties with complicated cases such as Rheumatology, Hematology and Oncology. All aspects of outpatient Hepatology are encountered. The TWH Liver Centre also participates in the Toronto Hepatoma Screening Program and participates in the management of hepatoma. However, we do NOT look after patients who have had a liver transplant - their care is transferred to the Multi-Organ Transplant Centre.
The TWH Liver Centre employs extensive use of technology to facilitate care, from order entry for lab tests and radiology, to electronic health records for more efficient clinical review and communications with referring physicians, to Telehealth for evaluating patients at remote sites, to website and web-based education sessions to fasciliate ongoing education. Trainees are also expected to develop leadership skills through community education programs, quality-assurance reviews or research projects.
