Dr. David Wong, the clinical director, is an acknowledged content expert in the management of viral hepatitis. Dr. Wong is also the Education Director for Hepatology Education at the University of Toronto. Dr. Wong was trained at the University of Toronto School for both medical school and Internal Medicine. After completing his Gastroenterology training at McMaster University, Dr. Wong worked as post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard University 1994-1999, under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Walker, studying the cellular immune responses to hepatitis C infection. He then returned to Canada and has been at the TWH Liver Centre since 2004. Dr. Wong's other interests include liver disease in HIV, the development of electronic clinical notes. Dr. Wong also plays a large role in patient and physician education. He is the recipient of teaching awards including the Lou Cole teaching award for Gastroenterology, the Wightman-Berris Academy award for teaching excellence and the University Health Network Award for excellence in clinical teaching.

Dr. Jenny Heathcote founded the TWH Liver Centre in 1979. Although her first love was hepatitis B, she strayed into the field of autoimmune hepatitis. She has since established the Canadian National Training Program for Hepatitis C, the goal of which is to foster a multidisciplinary approach to hepatitis C.

Dr. Jordan Feld did his clinical training at the University of Toronto in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology followed by clinical and laboratory research fellowships in hepatology with a focus on viral hepatitis. Dr. Feld spent the past 4 years as part of the Liver Diseases Branch of the National Institutes of Health and also completed a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. He has recently returned to Toronto to join the staff of the Toronto Western Hospital Liver Centre and also has an appointment as a clinician scientist in the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health where he studies mechanisms of interferon non-response in hepatitis C infection.

Dr. Gideon Hirschfield is a Clinician Investigator at the Liver Centre. In addition to being a General Hepatologist he has a particular interest in autoimmune liver disease and cholestasis, running the Autoimmune Liver Disease Clinic and research programme. This area of Hepatology includes Autoimmune hepatitis, Primary biliary cirrhosis, Primary sclerosing cholangitis, and Autoimmune pancreatitis. Other areas of special interest are in Transition Hepatology for pediatric patients transferring to adult care, Wilson`s disease and Consult Hepatology. He was trained in the UK where he studied first at Oxford and then Cambridge University. He has a PhD from the University of London, and completed his Gastroenterology and Hepatology training predominantly whilst working on the Liver Transplant Programme, Addenbrooke`s Hospital, Cambridge.

Dr. Sanjeev Sockalingam graduated from medical school at the University of Manitoba and completed his psychiatry residency training at the University of Toronto. He is currently a staff psychiatrist at the University Health Network in the Program of Medical Psychiatry and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Sockalingam is the psychiatrist for the Toronto Western Hospital Liver Centre. He is also a consultant for the Toronto General Hospital Hepatology Program and the East Toronto Hepatitis C Program. His research interest is in the prevalence and management of neuropsychiatric disorders and psychological distress in patients with liver disease, mainly hepatitis C. Colina Yim has worked at the Liver Clinic since 1986. Her area of expertise is in viral hepatitis. She received her Master degree in Nursing from the University of Toronto in 2001 and has since worked in the capacity as a Nurse Practitioner. She runs a viral hepatitis clinic in collaboration with Dr. Jenny Heathcote three days a week. She has been instrumental in leading hepatology nursing as a subspecialty and in providing up-to-date education to nurses, patients and the public. She is the founder of the Canadian Association of Hepatology Nurses and the Ontario Hepatitis Interest Group, and a current member of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Hepatitis C Task Force. She is also actively involved with many professional organizations and their committees including the AASLD Practice Guidelines Committee and the Canadian Liver Foundation.

Dr. Hemant Shah completed his medical degree, residency and fellowship training in Gastroenterology at the University of Toronto. He is a Lecturer at the University of Toronto, and currently pursuing a Masters of Medical Education degree. His clinical interest is viral liver disease and his academic interests include optimizing knowledge translation amongst patients, primary care physicians, and specialists.

Wendy Medved is the Manager of the Liver Clinic. She is currently completing a Master’s of Health Science degree in Health Administration in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She is primarily responsible for overseeing the management of clinical trials, preparing grant applications and Research Ethics Board submissions, and for the supervision of staff and clinic flow.

Treatment Nurse: Danie La RN, BSN is a nursing graduate from the University of Toronto. She joined the Liver team in 2006 and is mainly involved in the care of patients with hepatitis C undergoing treatments. She is fluent in Cantonese and Vietnamese and has provided education talks to patients and families in those languages. She is on maternity leave until Oct 2009.

Clinic Nurse: Sharlene Domaoal-Camaya RN is a staff nurse who joined the Liver Centre in 2008. Her previous nursing experience includes managing patients post transplantation and patients after day surgeries. Her duty is to help ensure clinic runs smoothly. She mainly deals with hepatitis B patients and is responsible for the government’s Exceptional Access Program applications. She also takes charge of the hepatitis vaccination program. She currently is on maternity leave until April 2009.

Treatment Nurse: Magdalena Kuczynski RN, BSN has been a team member since 1999. She is a nursing graduate from the Ryerson University. Her major role is to manage patients with hepatitis C on treatment. She has also been involved in preceptoring nurses who are new to hepatology, and engaged in education activities for patients and the public.

Camelia C joined our team as a Clinical Research Coordinator in December 2006. She completed her medical degree at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Iasi, Romania. She is highly involved in assessing, teaching and managing HCV patients recruited to clinical trials of the brand new small molecule antiviral agents.

Elizabeth Lee RN, BSN is a new addition to the Liver Centre in 2009. Before joining the team, she worked at the Sherbourne Health Centre to help develop their community-based Hepatitis C treatment program with support from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Hepatitis C Secretariat. As a recent nursing graduate, she is eager to continue expanding her knowledge base in viral hepatitis by learning from her seasoned colleagues.

Catalina is the coordinator for the care and management of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. She is a trained physician from Romania and has been a team member since 2002. She is highly involved with the PBC patient support group and its activities.

Diana RN, BSN is a Clinical Research Coordinator and has been an invaluable team member since 1999. She is a nursing graduate from the Ryerson University. Her main responsibility is the coordination of clinical trials including treatment management for both hepatitis B and C. Unsal Acarsu works as technical analyst at the Liver Clinic. He deals with Liver Clinics’ database as well as he extracts data from UHN’s database for research purposes. He holds a B.A. in Information Technology and Health Informatics from York University.
